Phantasy Star Portable tops Media Create charts

PSP narrowly beats DS Lite in hardware

Phantasy Star Portable topped the Media Create sales charts in a week full of new releases across all platforms. The PSP also maintained its lead in the hardware race, although just narrowly.

The PSP installment in the Phantay Star Online/Universe line of titles debuted with 341,700 units over the period covering July 28 to August 3. This represents a sell ratio of 86% of the game's stock, according to Media Create.

DS had its own major debut this week, with Rhythm Tengoku Gold, the latest entry in the critically acclaimed rhythm series, shifting 212,877 units. This was more than enough to push last week's number one, Dragon Quest V, into third place with 111,836 units.

Soul Calibur IV debuted this week on both the PS3 and 360. The PS3 version sold 74,607 units, besting the 360 version's 34,786. In between the two was the PS2 version of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball, which shifted 37,106 units in its second week.

The top ten closed off with Fatal Frame (Tecmo, Wii, 33,456 units), Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii, 32,201), Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii, 23,143), and Gundam Battle Universe (Namco Bandai, PSP, 20,856). Of these, the Wii version of Fatal Frame was new.

Other titles debuting outside the top ten this week were Mamegoma 2 (18, Creative Core, DS), Doki Doki Majo Shinban 2 (20, SNK Playmore, DS), Tengai Makyo Collection (25, Hudson, PSP), Nobunaga no Yabou 2 (26, Koei, DS), Major DS Dream Baseball (30, Takara Tomy, DS), and Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Collection (35, Hudson, PSP).

In the hardware race, PSP pushed 61,181 units, putting it at top, but by just a few thousand over the DS Lite's 57,398. Wii had 41,109 units, topping the consoles, ahead of PS3's 9,508 units, PS2's 9,045 units, and Xbox 360's 5,359 units.
