Sony releases PSP budget titles for download

Simultaneous UMD and download release for first party titles.

This month's installment of Sony's monthly budget software announcement came with a special surprise for PSP owners. Sony announced that upcoming first party budget PSP re-releases will be released in both UMD and direct download form.

The first two titles to get this treatment are Mugen Kairou and Sarugetchu Saru Saru Daisakusen. Both will be released under the PSP the Best branding on December 1. Retail UMD versions will go for 2,800 yen, with the direct download versions going for 2,200 yen.

You can still buy PSP games the old fashioned way.

The download option appears to apply just to first party titles at the moment. Bandai Namco's Haruhi Suzumiya's Promise will see a PSP the Best version on December 4, but only as a UMD costing 2,940 yen.

PS3 and PS2 will also see new budget releases, all to retail. Here's a full list:

  • Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan PS3 the Best (Sega, 12/11/2008, 2,940 yen)
  • Minna no Golf 5 PS3 the Best (SCEJ, 12/11/2008, 3,800 yen)
  • Armored Core for Answer PS3 the Best (From Software, 12/18/2008, 2,940 yen)
  • Haruhi Suzumiya no Tomadoi PS2 the Best (Bandai Namco, 12/4/2008, 2,940 yen)
  • Kagero II: Dark Illusion PS2 the Best (Tecmo, 12/18/2008, 1,890 yen)

Kagero II was previously released under the PS2 the Best branding. The new version is about 1,000 yen cheaper.

Major PlayStation 3 titles are getting price cuts.
