Bandai Namco to buy green energy for gamers

PS3 and Wii games to become more environmentally friendly in 2009.

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Bandai Namco will be holding an environmentally friendly campaign in 2009 that it hopes will educate gamers about environmental problems while also feeding green energy into the power grid.

The Thursday morning edition of the paper reports that Bandai Namco will be purchasing Renewable Energy Credits in place of consumers who play its games. These credits cover the additional cost required to produce wind-based electricity.

All Wii and PS3 games shipped in 2009 will be compatible with the program, the paper says. Buyers will have to input a serial number that's included with the games into a special website. Bandai Namco will purchase a certain number of credits for each game.

Bandai Namco expects the program to have an educational effect on young players.
