Dissidia, DSi, PSP remain atop Media Create charts

Final Fantasy fighter now third best selling PSP game of all time.

The beginning of 2009 brought about the expected across-the-board drop in hardware and software sales. But a few things did carry over into the new year as Dissidia, DSi, and PSP continued to dominate.

For the week spanning January 5 through January 11, Media Create reports that Dissidia Final Fantasy (Square Enix, PSP) was the best selling game, with 48,675 units. This is the second week in a row at the top for the title, which gave up first place for just one week to White Knight Chronicles.

Total sales for Dissidia now stand at 819,000 units. The game is now the third best selling PSP title, having topped Crisis Core's 788,000 units.

The PSP the Best budget version of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (Capcom, PSP) continued to climb the charts, and ended up in second this week with 34,191 sales. Last week, the title made a sudden reappearance in the top ten, likely fueled by a surge in PSP ownership to accompany the year-end gift giving season.

Three long-selling Nintendo titles followed. Rhythm Heaven (Nintendo, DS) sold 33,480 units this week for third place. Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) sold 29,561 units for fourth. Wagamama Fashion Girls Mode (Nintendo, DS) managed 29,433 units, for fifth place.

A series of PlayStation titles followed. White Knight Chronicles (Sony, PS3) sold 26,495 units in its third week, bringing total sales fo the Level-5 RPG up to 305,000 units. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III (Sony, PS3) sold 25,440 units. This figure includes both solo hardware bundles sales. The PS2 version of Gundam Musou 2 (Bandai Namco, PS2) sold 25,270 units. The PS3 version, while having initially sold better than the PS2 version, placed 15th this week.

Closing off the top ten were Hoshi no Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe (Nintendo, DS) with 23,409 units, and Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii) with 21,548 units. Kirby has now topped the million mark, a feat that took ten weeks, far ahead of the 39 weeks taken by 2006's Kirby title.

In hardware, all systems were down dramatically from the prior week. DSi sold 78,201 units, down from 182,518 the week before. DS Lite also saw a drop from 48,160 units last week to 23,429. PSP reached 157,088 units last week but fell to 60,495 units this week.

Wii lead in consoles once again, but fell from last week's 119,965 units to 41,243 units. PS3 dropped from 60,654 units to 28,144 units. Xbox 360 managed 10,554 units this week, down from last week's 19,694.

Total software sales for the week were 1,209,711 units, a drop to 43.25% of last week's total. The figures are in line with last year, though, as sales for the first full week of 2008 were 1,187,493 units.
