PSP tops 50 million worldwide

Over 200 million pieces of software sold.


Sony Computer Entertainment Japan announced today that worldwide shipments of the PlayStation Portable have topped the 50 million mark. The figure was reached at the end of January and includes all systems that have already shipped out from Sony to retailers.

The company also shared software figures for the system. Worldwide, over 2,000 UMD-based games have seen release, with total worldwide software sales as of December 2008 having topped 200 million units.

Regarding downloadable games, the company noted that, also as of December 2008, PSP throughout the world has seen a total of 500 titles made available for download. This figure includes full PSP releases as well as original PlayStation titles available under the Game Archives service.
