PS3 tops Media Create charts

DSi dethroned for first time since launch thanks to strong Yakuza 3 sales

Fueled by a strong debut for Yakuza 3 (Ryu ga Gotoku 3), PlayStation 3 topped both the hardware and software charts this week. For hardware, this was the PS3's first top placement in eight months, and the first time DSi hasn't topped the charts since its November release.

Yakuza 3 (Sega, PS3) sold 372,301 units in its first week of sales. This is the PS3's second highest software debut following Metal Gear Solid 4's debut with 465,000 units. Yakuza 3's predecessor, the side story Yakuza Kenzan, managed lifetime sales of 348,000 units, a figure that part 3 topped in just one week.

Yakuza 3 promotions around Tokyo on the day of release. In addition to signing and demo events, Sega staged a variety of tie-up promotions for the game.

Also debuting highly this week was Shin Sangoku Musou Multi Raid (Koei, PSP), which captured second place with 219,139 units. This was far higher than the 61,000 unit debut of the original PSP Shin Sangoku Musou (Dynasty Warriors) game. Multi Raid offers four player cooperative play, and presumably appealed to Monster Hunter fans. Media Create reports a high 79.69% sell-through rate for the game.

Mario & Luigi RPG 3!!! (Nintendo, DS) placed third this week with 52,294 units sold, bringing its three week total up to 307,000 units.

A bunch of new titles followed. One Piece Unlimited Cruise Episode 2 (Bandai Namco, Wii) took fourth with 45,309 units. Game Center CX 2 (Bandai Namco, DS) followed in fifth with 43,771 units. These were followed by the Sunday X Magazine (Konami, DS) crossover fighter, which debuted with 23,447 units, and The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match (SNK Playmore, PS2), which managed 19,473 units.

The top ten closed off with three older titles. Star Ocean 4 (Square Enix, Xbox 360) fell from last week's top spot to eighth place this week with 17,012 units. Taiko no Tatsujin Wii (Bandai Namco, Wii) followed with 16,631 units, bringing its total since its December 11 release to 400,000 units. Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) took tenth place this week with 16,242 units.

Debuting outside the top ten were Ougon no Corda 2 Forte (Koei, PSP) at 11, Chaos Head Noah (5pb, Xbox 360) at 12, Halo Wars (Microsoft, Xbox 360) at 14, Way of the Samurai 3 (Spike, Xbox 360) at 27, DS Uchida Yasuo Mystery (D3 Publisher, DS) at 31, Really Learn, Succeed at LEC DS: Real Estate Broker (Square Enix, DS) at 43, and Mimana Iyar Chronicle (Gung-Ho Works, PSP) at 48.

In hardware, the PS3 barely beat out the DSi, which barely beat out the PSP. PS3 sold 36,513 units, a leap from last week's 16,149 units. DSi sold 35,827 units, down further from last week's 41,839 units. DS Lite contributed an additional 11,774 units this week, up from last week's 9,975 units. PSP saw somewhat of a boost from last week's 29,552 units to 35,588 units this week.

Closing out the console race, Wii rose slightly from last week's 16,973 units to 17,876 units. Xbox 360 fell sharply from last week's Star Ocean-influenced 25,334 units to 11,795 units.
