Crystal Defenders hits XLA/PSN; iPhone update on the way

New developments for Square Enix's tower defense series

Square Enix made available today the previously announced PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Crystal Defenders. Both versions can be downloaded directly to the systems at respective pricing of 900 yen and 800 Microsoft Points.

Released first last year on cell phones, Crystal Defenders is a "tower defense" game in which players position units on a static map with the goal of preventing a string of enemies from making it from the map's start point to the end point. The units are named after Final Fantasy series jobs and make use of character designs from Final Fantasy Tactics A2.

Outside of cell phones, the franchise has thus far appeared on iPhone and WiiWare. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions contain ports of the W1, W2 and W3 cell phone games, updated with HD visuals and an online ranking mode.

Today's release was accompanied by some good news for owners of the iPhone/iPod touch version of the game. Square Enix will be giving the game a free update shortly, adding support for horizontal screen play. The precise timing of the update was not shared today.
