Yakuza 3 crosses half million mark

Series passes three million.

Sega promotes Yakuza 3 through a giant ad in Shinjuku just before launch. Outside of a large ad presence, the company's promotional campaign for the game included tie-ups with a number of real world brands and products.

Three straight weeks in the top ten ought to have suggested as much, but Ryu ga Gotoku 3 (aka Yakuza 3) does indeed appear to be selling well. The game has shipped 500,000 units domestically, Sega announced today, making it one of the few PS3 games to reach the milestone thus far.

Released on February 26, Yakuza 3 topped Media Create's weekly sales charts in its first week, with 372,301 units giving it the second highest software debut ever for the PS3. The title placed fifth last week, and, based off early Media Create reports, will also be in the top ten this week.

In a statement today, Sega said that it views the 500,000 mark as merely a passing point, and plans to extend the game's sales further.

The Yakuza series as a whole has now topped the 3.2 million mark in worldwide shipments, Sega also said today.
