Super Robot Wars, new colors drive DS to top of Media Create charts
PlayStation family holds on in both hardware and software.
With the support of a new Super Robot Wars game and new DSi color variations, Nintendo managed to top the Media Create sales charts this week. But Sony still proved a strong competitor, with the PSP nearly beating the DSi in hardware, and software for Sony systems dominating the top 10.
Super Robot Wars K was the top placer for the week covering March 16 through March 22. Bandai Namco's latest installment in its anime-influenced strategy series debuted on the DS with 117,388 units and a 61.12% sell-through rate. The game was released on the 20th rather than the 19th, presumably to line up with the release of Nintendo's new colors (the 20th was a holiday). Still, the game came close to 2007's Super Robot Wars W, which sold 139,000 in its first week.
In somewhat of a rarity these days, two PS2 games followed. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2009 (Konami) debuted at 50,324 units, followed by the love simulation game Amagami (Enterbrain), which debuted at 42,490 units. The baseball game's start appears to be low compared to past entries. PS2's part 14 debuted with 153,000 units, with part 15 falling to 84,000 units. It's possible that Japan's recent success in the World Baseball Classic could drive sales from here on out.
For the most part, the rest of the top 10 was old. Mario & Luigi RPG 3 (Nintendo, DS) came in at fourth with 39,183 units. Two top performing PS3 games followed, with Musou Orochi Z (Koei) in 5th with 35,545 units and Resident Evil 5 (Capcom) in 6th with 29,120 units. Rittai Picross placed 7th in its second week with 24,172 units.
Closing off the top ten were Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G PSP the Best (Capcom, PSP) in 8th with 22,714 units, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Next (Konami, Wii) in 9th with 22,496 units, and Dynasty Warriors Multi-Raid (Koei, PSP) in 10th with 18,678 units. Of these, only the Wii baseball game was new.
A large number of titles were released over the week but failed to make it into the top 10. These include Dengeki Gakuen RPG Cross of Venus (ASCII Media Works, DS) in 11th, Crayon Shinchan Arashi wo Youbu Nendororon Daihenshi! (Bandai Namco, DS) in 12th, Sarugetchu Piposaru Senki (SCE, PSP) in 13th, Harvest Moon Sugar Mura to Minna no Negai (Marvelous Entertainment, PSP) in 14th, Kuroshitsuji Phantom & Ghost (Square Enix, DS) in 15th, Tomoyo After It's a Wonderful Life CS Edition (Prototype, PSP) in 19th, Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 3 (Koei, PSP) in 20th, Brandish Dark Revenant (Nihon Falcom, PSP) in 25th, Detective Saburo Shinguji DS (Arc System Works, DS) in 29th, Ouran Koukou Host-bu (Idea Factory, DS) in 39th, and Musou Tourou (Nippon Ichi, PSP) in 49th.
In hardware, DSi and PSP both saw new color variations. DSi ended up coming out on top with 71,233 units, up sharply from last week's 27,564 units. PSP rose from last week's 43,463 units to 65,765 units. DS Lite dropped from last week's 11,571 units to 8,948 units this week.
In consoles, PS3 lead the way with 25,435 units, although this was a slight drop from last week's 28,014 units. Wii rose just a bit from last week's 17,941 units to 18,095 units. Xbox 360 continued to fall, reaching 5,441 units, down from last week's 8,378 units.
