Gears of War 2 date set
Microsoft plans standard, limited, and bundle versions for Summer.
Microsoft formally announced a final release date today for Gears of War 2. The sequel in a series that, according to the company, has sold 9 million units worldwide, will arrive domestically on July 30.
Although released overseas last November, the Japanese fate for Gears of War 2 was in question until a December Nikkei interview with Microsoft vice president Don Mattrick confirming plans for a 2009 release. More recently, Microsoft shared a summer release for the title at a press conference last week. Word of the July 30 date was leaked in advance last night by Microsoft Home and Entertainment head Takashi Sensui during a Famitsu.com event.
Gears of War 2 will be released domestically in three packages. Outside of a standard version costing 8,190 yen, players can opt for the 9,240 yen Gears of War 2 Limited Edition. Mirroring the overseas LE, this includes a hard cover art book, a bonus disc with development documentaries and other features, a "SteelBook" metal disc case, a download code for a gold-plated Lancer Assault Rifle, and a Dom and Maria keepsake photo. The art book is in English, with some Japanese translations.
Those who are new to the series will also be able to purchase the Gears of War Twin Pack. Also set for July 30 release, this bundle combines the Platinum Collection Gears of War and standard edition Gears of War 2 and will be priced at 10,290 yen.
While currently unrated, Microsoft states that Gears of War 2 will carry the expected Z CERO rating.
