Microsoft Celebrates Gears of War 2 Release with New Promos

Free online play, night vision binoculars, and barbecue sets.

Gears of War 2 is at long last hitting Japan this week. Microsoft is already giving players here some bonuses through the inclusion of the Dark Corners map pack for free. Today, it announced another set of promotions for the game, including a free online play period.

To celebrate the game's release, Microsoft will open up the game's online play servers to Silver members. Players will be able to try out the game's full set of online play options, including the five player cooperative Hoarde mode, with their paying Gold brothers.

The promotional period will run from August 1 at 1:00AM to August 4 at 1:00AM.

In addition to this promo, Microsoft announced a couple of prize promotions for the game.

Next month, the company will hold a ranking event for Hoarde mode. Participants will attempt to get the highest score, tallied from Hoarde ranking on all 29 Gears of War 2 multiplayer maps. Prizes include a 32 inch LCD TV, 5.1ch surround headphones, an Xbox 360 and Xbox Live accessory set, and a Gears of War 2 special item set.

Applications for participating in this ranking event will run from July 31 through August 7.

Here's a promotion that everyone (well, those 18 and up, at least) can take part in. The Gears of War 2 official site has a series of movies. These movies contain a total of six hidden letters, which can be combined to form a password.

Send the password to Microsoft through the official site between July 30 and August 31, and you'll be entered into a drawing to win some spiffy prizes, including a Lancer Assault Rifle (given to one person), Nashica Night Vision Binoculars (given to three people), and a Captain Stag Dutch Oven Beginners Set (given to two).

Gears of War 2 hits retail on July 30.
