Nintendo Sales and Earnings Down for Quarter

Lack of blockbusters and rising yen push Kyoto giant down.

Nintendo shared its quarterly earnings report today, covering the three months ending June 2009. Sales and profits were both down from the same three month period last year due to, according to the company, a lack of blockbuster releases and an appreciating yen.

Sales for the three month period reached 253,498 million yen, down from last year's 423,380 million yen. Operating income was down from 176,892 million yen to 64,824 million.

DS hardware for the three month period reached sales of 5.97 million units worldwide, bringing lifetime sales to 107.75 million units. For DS software, the company cited "few popular titles" as reason for worldwide software sales of 29.09 million units, down from last year's 36.59 million.

Wii hardware pushed 2.23 million units, bringing the system to 52.62 million units life to date. The company cited "fewer blockbuster software titles" as reason for a lack of brisk hardware sales compared to last year's 5.17 million units. Total Wii software sales for the period reached 31.07 million units, down from last year's 40.41 million.

The software sales figures above do not include Virtual Console, WiiWare, and DSiWare.

The company also cited an appreciating yen over the quarter has having contributed greatly to lowered sales and earnings.

For the full year, running April 2009 through March 2010, Nintendo expects to sell 30 million DS systems and 26 million Wii units. On the software front, it expects 180 million DS games and 220 million DS games. These forecast figures do not include games bundled with hardware.
