PlayStation 3 Sells 3.8 Million
System sees best holiday season ever worldwide.
Coinciding with a Consumer Electronics Show (CES) speech today from Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai, SCEJ shared some worldwide holiday sales stats for the PlayStation 3.
Over the five week period covering the last week of November to the last week of December, Sony says that it sold 3.8 million PS3 systems worldwide. This is a leap of 76% over the same period the year prior, and the highest holiday sales ever for the platform.
Additionally, the company said that the PlayStation Network service has crossed the 38 million registered user mark worldwide.
The company attributed the system's success to the release of games like Assassin's Creed II, Final Fantasy XIII and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, as well as the system's Blu-ray playback and the various services and contents available through PSN.
For 2010, the company made note of upcoming titles like Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, and Massive Action Game (MAG), as well as the upcoming motion controller (still without a final name) and compatibility with 3D games and movies via a firmware update.
