The Super SFIV Blog Takes on Dudley

SFIII's Gentleman Boxer is now in SFIV. Find out why.

Capcom finished up its look at Super Street Fighter IV's SFIII cast today with the latest entry at the Super SFIV development blog. Following columns about Ibuki and Makoto, the spotlight is on Dudley this time. As usual, director Taisaku Okada fields the questions, joined this time by a Mr. Sano, Dudley's battle lead.

According to Okada, Dudley was given the honor of an appearance in Super SFIV both because of the number of passionate fans of the character on the Super staff and because of the character's popularity overseas. Apparently, when producer SFIV series producer Yoshinori Ono traveled to Europe to get opinions about a SFIV sequel, people would always ask him about Dudley. One frequent request was for a dream matchup between Dudley and fellow boxer Balrog.

In making the move from SFIII to Super SFIV, Dudley will retain his "Hit and Away" style play, as well as the style of fighting where you keep an eye on openings, the two revealed. He'll have all his moves from SFIII.

Playing as Dudley should be a unique experience for SFIV players. Sano feels that there isn't a single character in SFIV who's similar, although as far as fighting style goes, he gave a rather unsure Dhalsim.

It should be noted that although Balrog is also a boxer, he and Dudley are completely different. Balrog, an "in-boxer," is about charging in straight like a bull while Dudley, an "out-boxer," is more about footwork.

Sure enough, Okada feels that Balrog would be an interesting character to put in a match against Dudley. The questioner suggested that Dudley might have an advantage over Balrog, but Okada responded that they both have their own advantages -- Dudley with his footwork and variety of target combos and Balrog with his power.

It occurred to me that I never put up a story about Dudley's combos and special moves. So, here you go. Bathe yourself in Street Fighter's "gentleman boxer" while you wait for what many expect to be a another character unveil shortly.
