Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Teams with... Everything!
Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Doritos, Uniqlo, AXE deodorant -- Snake sells his soul, but at least he smells good!
The Monster Hunter and Assassin's Creed tie-ins are likely the biggest collaborations announced at today's Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker completion ceremony. But Konami announced a whole lot more than just those two. Peace Walker is seeing enough collaborations to make Phantasy Star Portable and Yakuza take note.
One of the promotions, a tie-up with Suntory, was previously announced. Originally, Konami revealed that Suntory would be releasing limited edition themed Mountain Dew cans on April 27. Priced at the standard ¥120 a can, the cans come in 8 varieties, each depicting a Peace Walker character.
The tie-up goes a bit deeper than this. In Peace Walker, you'll find Mountain Dew and Pepsi Nex in-game items. You can make your character drink these as recovery items. Additionally, those who buy one of the special Mountain Dew cans will find a code that can be input into Peace Walker to get an original t-shirt featuring the Mountain Dew logo.
As big as the Suntory collaboration is, it's got nothing on the collaboration Konami and clothing maker Uniqlo have come up with. Uniqlo shops, both in Japan and abroad, will sell 10 different types of shirts starting April 26. The shirts will be priced at ¥1,500. Each shirt includes a code which can be put into the game to unlock a similar version of the shirt as an in-game item.
Konami will be getting some major exposure for Peace Walker thanks to this tie-up. Select Uniqlo shops from northern Hokkaido all the way to southern Fukuoka will have kiosks which will distribute special Uniqlo shirts for use in Peace Walker. Additionally, select shops in Tokyo and Saitama will have Peace Walker demo units on display.
Other collaborations include:
- Fritos Japan
- Doritos will appear in the game as a recovery item.
- Unilever Japan
- "AXE" deodorant will appear in the game as a recovery item.
- Sony
- You'll be able to listen to background music using an in-game Walkman. The game will feature a variety of Walkman models, from back in the 70s to modern times.
- Magazines
- Peace Walker will have tie-ups with a variety of magazines, including Famitsu, Dengeki PlayStation, Dengeki Games, and Shounen Magazine. It's unclear what role these will have in the game, but other multiplayer PSP games have featured quest collaborations with various publications.
Famitsu.com got first pics of all these collaborations, so see their story for a first look.
