Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Playable at Tokyo Game Show

Attendees can try out Xbox 360 version, but not new easy mode.

The biggest change for the Japanese 360 version is the inclusion of an Easy Mode.

Final Fantasy XIII's Japanese Xbox 360 release was the big news at today's Xbox 360 Media Briefing event. It's also gong to be one of the big showpieces at next week's Tokyo Game Show.

In an interview in this week's Famitsu, producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed that the game will appear in playable form at the show.

Kitase did not say what exactly players would get to sample. He would only confirm that the new Easy Mode will not be in the demo version.

Outside of the TGS notice, Kitase, director Motomu Toriyama and battle director Yuji Abe provided Famitsu with a few additional details about easy mode.

Kitase described the new mode as something that "simplifies" battles. It's being added to the game out of consideration for players who might have gotten stuck in the PS3 version's battle system. The goal is to allow players like this to get through the full story.

Abe shared some of the specifics. The biggest change is that breaks are now easier to pull off. They've made it so that you get more chain bonuses, so those who aren't skilled at Optima changes will better enjoy themsleves.

Other changes include:

  • Changes to the item drop rate
  • Accessories can be more easily modified
  • Adjustments to ally AI

Regarding the AI changes, Abe mentioned a single example: quicker use of haste.

The AI changes, Kitase noted, aren't just for Easy Mode but for the full game as a whole.

Famitsu noted that in past International versions, Square Enix has added powerful enemies to the games. There will be no such changes for the 360 Japanese release, Abe said. Rather than tuning the game to be more difficult, they've placed the priority on making things simpler in order to allow everyone to play.

You'll be able to experiment with easy mode. It's not an option that you have to set at the beginning of the game. You can go into the options even during the game and switch easy mode on and off. Abe suggested that you should switch it on if you feel that you've come to a tough area.

Easy mode won't get in the way for those who like to try out time attacks using the game's battle system. The battle result screen will clearly mark when you've used easy mode.
