Retailer Reports 400,000 First Shipment for 3DS

Pre-order or Iwata will laugh!

The 3DS launch lineup is pretty light, but the system has a big lineup on the way for March, including Nintendo's own Steel Diver (shown above).

Nintendo has officially stated that it plans on shipping 4 million 3DS units worldwide this fiscal year (by the end of March), of which 1.5 million are targeted for Japan. But the big question for those debating a pre-order is, how many of those units will be available on launch day.

A retailer is reporting the figure to be 400,000 units. This, according to the report, is not all that high a figure, and the retailer suggests that interested parties pre-order the system.

Retailers large and small are expected to begin taking pre-orders on the 20th.

A shipment of 400,000 would put the system at the level of Wii, which largely sold out of its initial shipment back in 2006.

When 3DS arrives on February 26, it may not be the only portable game machine in short supply. The PSP has been suffering shortages of its own, which is why the system saw such a huge drop off in last week's Media Create's sales. Sony is widely expected to announce a PSP successor at a January 27 press conference in Tokyo.
