Marvelous Cancels Major PS3 and Xbox 360 RPG
Large scale RPG dropped after considerations for future market environment.
Marvelous Entertainment's latest earnings report, issued today, contains some unfortunate news for gamers who were hoping for a big HD production from the Harvest Moon publisher. The company said that it has decided to cancel development on a large scale RPG that had been in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The title of the game was not shared.
The decision came after consideration of the future game market environment, Marvelous said. Losses attributed to the cancelation were 245 million yen.
Back in 2009, Marvelous made mention of a multiplatform title targeting high end machines. It's unclear if this cancelled PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 RPG is the same game that was mentioned then.
For the nine months spanning April 1 to December 31, 2010, Marvelous saw sales of 5,764 million yen, a 12.7% drop from the same period the previous year. The company posted operating profits of 409 million yen, compared to a 1,208 million yen loss the prior year.
Looking just at MMV's "digital contents" business, which covers home video games and online games, sales dropped 25.8% to 2,250 million yen. However, the division saw operating profits of 89 million yen, compared to the 311 million yen loss the year prior.
Strong titles included Harvest Moon Futago no Mura (DS) which outperformed its predecessor with shipments approaching 200,000 units, and Fate Extra (PSP), which the company said became a hit with shipments exceeding 100,000 units.
In the area of online games, browser games Harvest Moon Together and Browser Ikki Tousen have been performing well the company said.
