Sega Readying 20th Anniversary Puyo Puyo for DS
Latest take on classic puzzler offers new and old rules and eight player download play support.
It's Puyo Puyo's 20th anniversary this year, and Sega is celebrating as one might have expected: with a new Puyo Puyo game!
Puyo Puyo!! is in development for DS release on July 14. The game will be released in standard form for ¥5,040 and as part of a special ¥8,379 anniversary box.
This latest take on the classic falling blocks puzzle title features 15 rules, some new and some from past games like Puyo Puyo Sun and Puyo Puyo Fever. Classic characters are also returning, to be joined by some new ones.
The game offers a new mode called "Pair de Puyo Puyo," or "Puyo Puyo as Pairs." Here, you team up with another player or the CPU and face off against another pair in two on two team battles. You can team up for group chains.
Other modes of play include School mode, where you learn the basics of the game, Challenge, where you're presented with tough challenges, and Shop, where you can purchase items using points that you acquire during your play sessions.
For multiplayer play, the game supports Wi-Fi Connection for play against players nationwide. Locally, two to eight players can get in on the action via a single cart.
That pricey anniversary box is so pricey because it includes 30 character key holders, a strap, and a special box.
