Zelda Propels 3DS Back Into First Place
Remake of classic Nintendo 64 title vies for top software sales spot with Level-5's much delayed Little Battle Experience.
Depending on your choice of sales tracking firm, Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D was either the best selling or second best selling game last week. Regardless, the remake of the Nintendo 64 classic gave 3DS a much needed boost, propelling Nintendo's new hardware ahead of the PSP for the first time in twelve weeks.
Media Create's sales chart covering June 13 through June 19 has Level-5's long awaited PSP title Little Battle Experience in top with 166,187 units, just ahead of Zelda's 164,110 units. Enterbrain's chart for the same period, provided at Famitsu.com without sales figures, has the positions reversed.
3DS benefitted more from the major release, as hardware sales surged from last week's 24,649 units to 40,649 units. PSP saw a modest hardware boost from 26,681 units to 31,741 units.
Zelda may have been supply constrained. In advance of the game's release, retailers reported a low initial shipment. Media Create and ASCII usually provide sell-through rate information in their Friday sales reports, so we should get a better idea of the situation then.
The other big news for the week was 5pb.'s Steins; Gate adventure series. The love-themed Xbox 360 offshoot Hiyoku Renri no Darling sold 31,666 units in its first week, giving the 360 a rare top ten placement. A bundle combining that game with the edgy original Steins; Gate placed fifth, with a Platinum Collection budget release for the original also making it into the top 20.
Here's the full Media Create top 20 covering June 13 through June 19, as passed along today at 4gamer. Publisher, release date and life-to-date sales are in parentheses. For a more graphical look at the chart, see our rankings page.
