Nikkei reports today that social gaming giant DeNA will be acquiring a majority stake in the Yokohama Bay Stars baseball team. TBS Holdings will sell most of its 70% stake in the team to DeNA, pending approval of the twelve team owners association. The sales price is expected to be about 10 billion yen.
DeNA operates the popular Mobage social gaming platform. According to Nikkei, DeNA has expressed interest in acquiring a baseball team in order to build name recognition.
The Yokohama Bay Stars team has had poor performance, resulting in lower attendance and broadcast revenues. TBS has been fielding the team's 20 billion yen annual loss.
