The Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road team are hard at work on a new card-based arcade game. While we first got hints about the game a couple of months back, Square Enix formally announced the game today as "Chousoku Henkei Gyrozetter."
In Gyrozetter, you control a machine that can transform from car to robot form. Making use of cards, you face off against rival robots in battle that takes place in two modes: driving mode and robot mode.
The game's cabinet attempts to mimic your transformation. During the driving parts, you control the action with a steering wheel controller. When you transform into robot form, the cabinet itself transforms into robot mode, giving you access to special levers.
Square Enix is teaming up with Japanese car makers to add a touch of reality to the game. Cars from Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mitsuoka, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota will appear in the game along side original designs.
Chousoku Henkei Gyrozetter is being produced by produced by Ryutaro Ichimura (Dragon Quest IX) and developed by Rocket Studio, developer of the Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road series, which sold 247 million cards by the time Square Enix retired the series in August 2012. Designers from such series as Macross and Gundam are working on the game's mecha component.
Look for Square Enix's newest original franchise in 2012. But not just in arcades! Square Enix is going the full media mix route with this one. A comic will kick off in Shueisha's Saikyou Jump magazine, which gets its first issue as a monthly magazine on December 3. A television anime from A-1 Pictures is in production for 2012. Square Enix is also developing a 3DS game based off the franchise. Fans can also look forward to toys and more!
Visitors to Jump Festa on December 17 and 18 will be shown the first trailers for the game and anime. Square Enix is also planning a variety of promotional displays, including glimpses at prototype toys and the first public showing of the arcade cabinet.
