Sony Computer Entertainment formally announced a sequel to LocoRoco today, and also offered a first look at the game through a handful of screenshots.

One of the biggest early PSP titles returns for a full sequel

Titled LocoRoco 2, the sequel appears to inherit much from its predecessor in terms of visual style and characters. Sadly, Sony did not go into specifics aside from the announcement of the title, although those wanting more info can turn to this week's Famitsu, which features an interview with the game's director, Tsutomu Konno.

Aside from the screenshots, Sony also opened up a [a href=http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/title/locoroco2/]teaser official site[/a] for the sequel today. Konno is interviewed at this site as well, but he remained vague in his comments, telling fans to expect more actions, music, gimmicks and mini-games from the title.

The LocoRoco look the same, but now they'll apparently have to work through water levels!

LocoRoco 2 will also be shown at E3 in video form, Sony revealed, so it's likely that further official details will be available then.

One of Sony's most hyped first party PSP titles, the original LocoRoco debuted in July of 2006, backed by a large advertisement campaign that emphasized the game's simple trigger-based control scheme and catchy soundtrack. That title was followed with a PS3 download-only offshoot.

LocoRoco 2 is currently without a final release date.
