Get Your Peace Walker Polygon Counts Here

What character has seven times as many polygons as Snake?

Warning: you might find yourself staring dangerously close at your PSP screen when playing Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker after reading this.

The latest Artist Relation Notes entry at the Kojima Production blog hit today. The focus for this third entry in the on-going art column (see this story for a summary of the first entry) is polygon counts.

Can you guess which of Peace Walker's primary cast members has the most polygons?

The answer is...

.

Paz! It's hard to believe, but the model for the small-framed Paz has 11,842 polygons! This is roughly the same amount as Cocoon, one of the massive AI Weapons.

Most of Paz's model data goes into her upper areas. No, higher! Her face and hair account for 70% of the polygon data. Just the hair alone is 55%.

Miller is no Paz, but he's got the details too, with 6,616 polygons for his model. This compares to the Pupa AI Weapon.

Can you guess what primary character has less than 1/5 of Paz's polygon count?

The answer is...

Snake! That's right, the character you see most often has just 1,631 polygons.

That's actually an unfair comparison, though, as the above figure is for the gameplay version of Snake. During event scenes, shown in the above image, Snake's polygon count doubles, putting him at the level of a mid boss tank.

Don't strain yourself trying to see those thousands of polygons on your tiny PSP screen.
