Wii Leads Consoles in Golden Week Hardware Sales

Media Create shares stats showing year-on sales trends of systems.

With game releases coming to a halt over the Golden Week period, Media Create's software chart for this week remained pretty much unchanged from last week's, aside from the reemergence of a few older Nintendo titles.

So what did the holiday period mean for hardware? The effect of a week without releases was similar here. PSP fell from its Metal Gear Solid-influenced surge, but aside from that and a slight drop in PS3 sales, the figures were flat.

Here's the hardware chart covering May 3 through May 9. Last week's sales are in parenthesis.

  • 1. PSP: 35,233 (59,315)
  • 2. Wii: 31,399 (30,757)
  • 3. PS3: 26,185 (32,874)
  • 4. DSi LL: 26,733 (25,569)
  • 5. DSi: 15,739 (15,628)
  • 6. Xbox 360: 4,278 (4,943)
  • 7. DS Lite: 3,921 (4,068)
  • 8. PS2: 1,491 (1,577)
  • 9. PSP go: 1,464 (1,890)

Media Create provided some stats showing how the various hardware makers performed during this year's holiday season compared to last year.

PS3 was up considerably over last year, selling 40% more systems this year. Wii was up 35%. PSP stayed about level.

DS saw a 23% drop in hardware sales compared to last year. Xbox 360, despite a second week of continued highs following the release of the Bayonetta/Forza 3 bundle pack, sold 25% less hardware this year than last.
