Sega's latest announcement has a good side, but maybe a bad side as well if you consider yourself a pure console gamer.
The good news: all those rumors of a Phantasy Star Online 2 were true. Sega is now developing Phantasy Star Online 2.
The bad news (if you're a console gamer): PSO2 is a PC game.
Announced today by Satoshi Sakai during a stage event for Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity at Tokyo Game Show, PSO2 is in development for PC release some time in 2011.
In a statement posted at a teaser newly opened site, Sakai referred to PSO2 as, like PSP2i, being part of the Phantasy Star Online series 10th anniversary project. He said that rather than being a mere sequel which retains the world setting and gameplay systems of the original, the team is working on making PSO2 a true successor to the first, and a completely new title.
The portal site has a streaming version of the teaser trailer that was shown at TGS. The trailer is just a recap of Phantasy Star Online series history with a PSO2 logo at the end. But Sakai says we won't get a followup report on the game until next year, so enjoy it!
Timed with this announcement, Sega opened a Phantasy Star portal site. The site has links to details and official sites for all the various Phantasy Star games going back to the Master System.
