Zombie Yakuza Tops the Charts

PS3 sees no hardware boost following major release.

Yakuza Of the End was a bright point in an otherwise slow week for game sales. Media Create's sales figures for June 5 through June 12 put the zombie themed Yakuza game high above the charts at nearly 300,000 units in its first week. This is nearly 20 times second place Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D, which was last week's top seller.

In the grand scheme of Yakuza games, Of the End is off to a middling start. Yakuza 4 sold 384,000 in its first week. Yakuza 3 sold 372,000.

There are a few possibilities to explain the game's slower start. Of the End represents a major change for the series, as in addition to the zombie theme, the gameplay emphasizing gun shooting. The game was also delayed by a few months beyond its originally planned March 17 date following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. It's possible that Sega may have tamed down whatever marketing campaign it was planning for the game owing to the quake.

Other newcomers in the top 20 this week include PSP and PS3 versions of an Evangelion pachinko game and the PS3 version of Red Faction Armageddon. As with last week, the numbers were on the whole low, with the 10th top selling title pushing just over 5,000 units.

Despite a major release, PS3 saw no appreciable sales spike. The system sold just a few hundred more units than last week, remaining under the 20,000 mark. The order in hardware sales remained unchanged, with both PSP and 3DS falling a bit.
