Nintendo drops 3DS price, readies Mario for year end

System price being slashed 10,000 yen on August 11. Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land due later this year.

Nintendo announced today that it will be dropping the price of the 3DS. The system, currently available for ¥25,000, will be cut to ¥15,000 on August 11.

This specific price cut only applies to Japan. However, Nintendo says that it will cut the overseas price as well some time this quarter (between July and September).

As reason for the price cut, Nintendo said that it hopes to speed up the spread of the 3DS as the year end rush approaches.

Nintendo also shared specific release time frames for two of its biggest 3DS titles. Super Mario 3D Land (the final name for the 3DS Mario game) will be released in November. Mario Kart 7 will be released in December. Nintendo did not say if these dates apply outside of Japan as well.

Two major Mario titles are due for 3DS release later this year.
