Dragon Quest X: Item Synthesis System and Mage Job

Dragon Quest X introduces a new Artisan System for creating items. Square Enix provided a look at that today, along with a look at the game's mage class.

Artisan System

To make items in Dragon Quest X for yourself and for other players, you register your character at a guild. Once registered, you'll need to gather materials and recipes for making specific items.

Screenshots show your character registered as a weapons smith and learning a recipe for making a Bronze Knife.

The game lets you register as a variety of different professions. Each has its own work place. Shown here, the work place for a weapon smith.

There's an actual work component to your profession, played in the form of a mini game. When making weapons, for instance, you'll need to forge the weapon shape properly, keeping an eye on a few gauges as you pound at the raw materials.

Similar to your job (job as in the traditional sense -- mage, warrior, etc.), your artisan job gives you access to special skills, which in the case of a weapon smith can aid in creating a better weapon. You also have a level. As this rises, you'll gain additional skills.

Outside of the weapon smith, Square Enix shared screens showing a wood worker making a wooden wand (used by mages and monks), a clothing specialist creating hats, clothes and accessories, and a "lamp alchemist." Rather than making new things, alchemists give new properties to current items.

So where do you get all the materials for making your items? There are two main sources. You'll find materials while out and about on your adventure. You can also purchase materials from a materials shop in town.

Once you've created an item, you can choose to either use it yourself, or you can sell it to a shop or sell it directly to other players in the bazar. A shop will pay fixed pricing, but you can set your own price at the bazar.

MAGE JOB

Joining the look at the artisan system, Square Enix provided screens showing the mage class, along with skills for weapons like the dual handed staff, dagger and whip.
