Capcom formally announced Resident Evil 6 today. The next numbered entry in the franchise is being developed for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The console versions are planned for Japanese release on November 22 (11/20 in North America and Europe), priced ¥7,990 (this is a bit cheaper than the ¥8,800 of RE5). The PC version is currently price and date TBA.

RE6 features past main characters Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield in the starring role. The game's story begins 10 years after the events of Raccoon City as the President of the United States plans to reveal the truth behind the incident with friend and survivor Leon at his side. The venue suffers a bioterrorist attack, transforming the President beyond recognition. Meanwhile, Chris arrives in China, which is also under bioterrorist attack.

In a statement sent out to the US press today, executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi said, "From the outset the team’s intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers."

Capcom Japan's announcement press statement read, "Capcom aims to position 'Resident Evil 6' as the company's leading title in order to continue building on past success in the global video game market. To accomplish this goal, the creation of this game is proceeding in the world's most advanced game development environment. The objective is to create the world's best content yet in the horror entertainment sector."

Capcom says that it will be making a formal Japanese announcement for RE6 at tonight's Resident Evil 15th Anniversary Premier Party. The event will be live streamed. For details on how to tune in, see this story.
