Super Mario 3D Land too 3D for you? 3DS owners won't have to wait too long for a true 2D Super Mario game.
During an earnings briefing in Tokyo today, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata revealed plans to release "a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D" for the 3DS in the coming fiscal year. That means a release between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013.
Iwata did not share details on the game, nor did he provide a logo. He did, however, show the logos for a number of other games, first and third party, that are also due out over coming fiscal year. See if you can recognize these:
Iwata also showed off the boxes for all the big releases that are due out before the end of the current fiscal year.
The announcement about the new Mario game came as part of a segment outlining Nintendo's improving 3DS business.
Iwata said that Nintendo expects to stop taking a loss on the hardware some time in the first half of the coming fiscal year. Losses from selling the system below cost following the 10,000 yen August price drop had an adverse effect on the company's profits for most of the year, admitted Iwata.
